Spring review: Lawry's Prime Rib, Causeway Bay, Hong Kong

1. My favourite sourdough and bacquette. Lawry's is one of the few places in HK I can get sourdough. 2. it was around 8pm but most customers arrived at 9pm.
v
3. a closer look to my favourite sourdough. 4. Lobster Bisque HK$85. It's pretty good but a bit too creamy and salty to me. If the cognac is a bit stronger, it would be perfect.

5. A frozen fork to take their famous spinning chilled salad. This is something simple but very thoughtful. Eating should be like that. We should care about some little details in our meals. 6. Spinning salad. Still very good. I often regard food to be served either hot or chilling cold. I don't prefer it to be at room temperature except water.

7. Spicy mustard and creamy mustard. I prefer the spicy one. 8. Lawry's cut HK$428. It's about 18 oz. Awesome! At this size of cut, it's so juicy and tender. However, I found a piece of wrapping paper on the outskirt. Though it's not that serious, I needed to tell the waitress to relay it to the Chef that they need to check on the other parts of the rib so that the customers wouldn't get the same. Of course, the waitress insisted to replace with another one, but I refused so by telling her that such a nice rib being dumbed is not what I want. That piece of paper is nothing but I need to have the Chef be aware of that.

9. Yoshire pudding. Personally i don't like it much as it's too filling. 10. Roast Spring chicken HK$298. Lawry's may need to concentrate on prime rib. The meat is too dry. I can tell the process of defrost wasn't done well. It was probably defrosted in either air or water exposure. By way of this, the meat juice would be gone easily. Roast chicken is another one which we think it's easy to cook. Sorry it's not.

11. Raspberry cake. I was offered this dessert complimentary due to the prime rib tiny flaw. Though it's not a big deal, the gesture is and in fact the waitress kept saying "sorry". 12. Iced decafe coffee, also complimentary.
13. It's on the 4/F of Lee Garden's mall.

帝后殿, 京川滬, Queen's Palace, CRE Plaza, Wanchai, Hong Kong

Passed by this place many times but often thought it is just a place for some hip restaurant. So out of curiosity of their all-you-can-eat menu at HK$198, I got to give it a try. After I took the seat, I fount out quite many Shanghai people were sitting around and they all sound like they are regular customers. The waiters and waitresses speak proficient Mandarin. Then I asked if the restaurant was moved from somewhere else. The answer is not. It's just one year something old.

1. the table ware. 2. Hot and spicy soup. Pretty good but it's not hot (temp) enough for me.

3/4. Honey glazed Chinese ham. The chef did a very good job with this one. Golden ham is very salty. So glazing it to sweet is a matter of time and patience.

5. Chilled pork jello. Also pretty nice. 6. Drunken chicken. The sauce is impressive and the wine flavour is just at the balance.

7. sliced pork on rice roll. At average but the sauce dipping is very nice. 8. sweet and sour pork. A bit too hard and chewy.

9. stir fried egg white with shrimp. The egg white was a bit too overdone and dried out. 10. veggie with beancurt sheet. The stock is very nice to bring out the veggie sweetness.

11. picked cucumber - nicely chilled and crushed. Sauce is perfect. 12. One more drunken chicken.

13. Vegetarian goose - this one is very nice. Crispy outside and juicy inside. 14. Nice setting.

15. Oil boiling beef - a bit disappointing as the beef is too marinated 16. One more glazed golden ham.

17, stir fried eel with bean sprout. The eel is selected! The sauce is a bit heavy though. 18. Fish slices in vinegar sauce. This fish is pretty fish and nicely marinated.

19. sweet corn with chicken soup, at average. 20. Pan fried string beans. Quite good.

21. mango pomelo sweet, at average. 22. Osmanthus jello, also average.
23. mini rice dumpling in broken rice wine. 24. deep fried egg white with red bean paste. Both are average. In general, the food are pretty nice. As it's a pre-set all-you-can-eat menu, I need to try their a-la-carte to check further.

Lo Fu as Lok Fu 老虎變樂富

During my visit at Lok Fu, I chatted with a senior about how Lok Fu got its name and just in a second, there it came the old name of Lok Fu.

Kuen Fat Restaurant North Point

This Kuen Fat is on Tsai Tze Mui Road 七姊妹道 in North Point and said to be a good one besides the one in Shaukiwan. It seems Kuen Fat is like Tsui King Lau whose name isn't registered.

1. the menu suggesting the Yuen Long style steamed rice flour flat noodle in clay pot 陳村粉. 2. sweet and sour spare ribs. The rib is a frozen one and chopped in very tiny pieces. The sauce is not enough to coat every ingredient though I don't always suggest heavy sauce.

3. Stir fried Kai Lan. This one is good though. At least the veggie is cut in proper size and stir fried nicely with salted fish yet to a not too salty flavour. 4. Pan fried lotus stem minced pork patty. This is also a good one. Besides the lotus stem is minced in the pork patty, a slice of lotus stem is put together with the patty to make it more crunchy and sweeter.

5. Stir fried sticky rice. The various dried sausages were used and pan fried nicely before mixing it with the sticky rice. Most of all, the rice texture was handled well. Not too hard but not too mashy.

KF Restaurant, Wanchai, Hong Kong

Stopped by this place at 3:15am and smelled the freshly baked chicken pie and egg tart. So take a break with a local style milk tea. yummy!

2/3. chicken pie at HK$4 and milk tea at HK$11.

4. egg tart. All the food here are very nostalgic in taste. 5. Certainly it's partly from the lard used to make it aromatic.
6. see how busy the restaurant is on Chuen Yuen Street.
