careless reporting by travel guide or magazine

Lately I read one travel magazine about Coran Spa on Suk 11/13 junction. It was written the Spa has a 50% on Thai massage down to B200, but later on I found out the 50% is only for the spa programs, not for Thai or other basic massages. I then checked on the promo. banner of Coran Spa. It read as "50% off on spa programs" with some small words mentioning they have Thai/foot massages. So it told those writers didn't even try the Thai massages and irreponsibly claimed it's 50% off for Thai massage. If I were the owner of Coran spa, I would definitely sue it for mis-reporting!

Then 2 days ago, a friend of mine bought a travel guide book about Phuket/Krabi. Just when I read the first page and the first sentence, I told my friend not to buy it. Unfortunately it was too late the cashier paid him back the changes. I told him the first sentence is very wrong. CX doesn't have any direct flight to Phuket from HK. Only KA has direct flights. Even for TG, the direct flights is not on a daily basis. On alternate days, TG would have a stop over at BKK.

Then reading thru' the guide book, we found out even more mistakes. Some hotels' names got changed in 2007 but still not amended but the guide book was claimed as "the newest in 2009"!

People who writes guide book or travel article only have two kinds, one for money and the other for enthusiasm.

Unfortunately 90% of people working with guide book and travel editorial just see this as a job and care for the pay check.

Worse is some people even combine advertising into potentially misleading article, so called advertorial.

The author knows some places are sucks, but with advertising contributions, he therefore recommend to his readers with the word 'good and cheap' instead 'sucks and expensive' in reality.

This widely happened in Hong Kong base well-known tourist guide books for Thailand.

There were a few times, some posted a map with all wrong locations. It's a bit risky to rely on such books. Actually some medias in HK are quite irresponsible in reporting. See what they report on the BKK's anti-Gov't riots. Also when the LA's Northridge quake happened, my HK friend sent me the headline news from some newspapers saying "LA became hell of life". Don't they ever think about writing these cruel word to the feelings of people still surviving with their lost ones? It's even not about money. It's about the morality.

Cannot agree more with you guys. Your comments are so right. I was told there is a famous jerk HK writer about BKK tour book and eating places. He will write good comments as long as you pay him or give him food.
Also, I cannot stand those irrsponsible and misleading reporters about the BKK Airport Protest end of 2008.

I was told that that guy even threatened some hotels if he couldn't get a free night, then he would spoke ill of those hotels. However, there are still a lot of HK people taking him as the main source for tips for Thailand.

好不負責任. 身為傳媒應該要更專業.
