Hui Lau Shan may not be the best dessert shop but their ever changing menu has kept its fans. In welcoming the winter time, they offer a mini fondue with some classic Chinese dessert. What's more one piece of pan fried turnip cake to go with it. Pretty cozy. However, I chose another new dessert - Longan coffee jello with coconut sorbet and mini sticky rice dumpling. It's quite a large portion good for 2 persons.

wow "Longan coffee jello with coconut sorbet and mini sticky rice dumpling" what a long name ..
i want Hui Lau Shan sell its franchise to Bangkok more than Ding Tai Fung, btw, the upcoming Ding Tai Fung will occupy 4 big shop space opposite left to Nara Thai on 7th of Central World, very ambitious investment
BTW, this one is about HK$33 and with its membership card, it's about HK$24. I was once asked how come I like coconut sorbet since I don't like coconut much. It's because their coconut sorbet is like those coconut drink we had in the old school time.
After Hui Lau Shan had a big setback from its Taiwan's shops due to the strict importation of Philippines mango, they may be hesitant to consider other overseas markets. Hope they know fruits in Thailand would make them a "go",
Din Tai Feng is really putting a big bet. On another side, I do find having the name for the shop is very important, at least my Taiwanese friends told me Gao Gee and Din Tai Feng were "ding dong pier (at the same level" when they first started business in Yung Kang Street Taipei. However, the name of Din Tai Feng is more impressive and classic.
Almost $5 US for this dessert is quite expensive. Very similar to Phoenix Food Boutique's dessert in LA(Monterey Park area).
well maybe Din Tai Fung (actually local investors bought Din's franchise rights) c some yacky substandard xiao-long-bao joints (e.g. Shanghai Xiao-Long-bao Restaurant ..) were well received by Bangokians, so the better quality and better taste Din Tai Fung is no way would not success ..
Stella, this is quite a big portion and good for 2 persons. I couldn't finish it all. HK$33 is about US$4.2. One more thing, we don't need to consider the tipping.
TC, OK, I'll have a Siu Lon Bao gizmo check this out when it's opened.
$4.2 US for 2 person is ok then.
Phoenix Food Boutique here is selling black sesame paste, red bean or green bean soup and other dessert at $2.5 US each.
But this one should be more expensive than red bean/green bean sweet. Hui Lau Shan once sells those at HK$10-12 (US$1.5) but people don't mind paying more for more fruits. :)
