再興燒味 Zhoy Hing BBQ pork

My new office is very near to this renowned BBQ pork shop. There is always a long queue in lunch and dinner time. Actually I need to tell you if you want the pork which is less burnt and the taste to be more modern, this is not the one you would want. When I was a kid, I was brought to a local restaurant and given a bowl of rice topped with the honey glazed BBQ pork. The soy sauce is kind of sweet. The pork has certain "bean paste" aroma in it, which is called ”豉味”. So nowadays not many BBQ shop they can make the BBQ pork with this aroma. Just simply pork glazed with honey. Someone may find this pork a bit too burnt. However, this is what I tasted when I was a kid, especially I loved that burnt parts.

Burnt BBQ half fat half thin "char siu" is the best although it is not healthy. Well, you don't eat this everyday anyway.

Yes, it is the best..... now I almost take that every other few days, but I often take out those fat parts....

I used to eat BBQ 2-ping(2 assortments) or 3-ping(3 assortments)lunch special (you can pick out of char siu, roast duck, soy sauce chicken, salty chicken or roast pig) every week. Until 2 years ago I reduced this to every other week. Yes I do take away the fat. But I cannot take away the skin from the roast duck and the roast little pig. Well, what is life for without good(but evil) food, at least once in a while.

Quite many years ago, I was told the BBQ stuff can cause cancer. Later on, someone even told me eating rice will cause cancer. Then I told myself "worrying too much" will also cause cancer. I often have a pretty balanced meal, meat, vegetable and rice.

BTW, now the combination of some BBQ shops have more to choose - with jelly fish, cold pork knuckle, octupus slices...etc.

I like your comment Mr. Sea about cancer. You are right, we have to be balanced. So "strict boring diet" or "over worry" can be as harmful as cancer.
Wow, you have jelly fish and pig knuckle for the "ping" dish. How lucky. This is only our wedding banquest dish here.

Oh I forgot to report to you that your "cube cube" recipe is really good. I tried this week. I did not include the bean sprout but still tastes good. Next time when you cook the "cube cube" please take a picture and post here. I bet it is even more delicious after seeing your picture.

It's not the bean sprout. It should be the string beans (豆角)- the deep green one. Not sure if you can find it in the States. Ok, it's now the season. I will try to make it one time - at least to surprise my sisters as that was the dish they liked quite much when they were at school.

Yes Mr. Sea. I had string bean in the dish too. But I remember someone told me(if not you then my other friend who likes cooking) I need to have bean sprout too. However, Chris did not like bean sprout so I did not put it there. But I put everything else you told me to. And I put lots of low-sodium dark soy sauce(this dish looks better in dark color). It tastes gorgeous. Thanks my cooking Teacher.

The mushroom, dried shrimp and BBQ pork can be a good combination for other things. You can also add some 菜莆 (picked vegetable). But if you do, reduce the salty flavour of the final mixing sauce. Actually, put a slight chilli will even make it better. That's good about cooking - lots of varying factors and combination.
