North Point Phoneix Restaurant (the original) 鳳城酒家 HK

Been here 3 years ago and that was still very good. Came back to hope for a nice authentic Cantonese dinner. Dropped to almost zero. First the pickled isn't nice. Too sweet and soft. Second their renowned deep fried chicken (HK$128 for half and it's a very small one) is awful. Quite undone inside but the skin is a bit overcooked to shrink, not crispy at all. See that so-called aromatic salt 椒鹽. See that color. It's just plain salt with very little roasted "five spice powder" in it. The other 2 dishes are just average, but if they charge it at HK$78/$50 respectively, then I wouldn't find it ok. Most of all, services are way below standard.

Phoneix in North Point used to be foodies canteen, and every table may order the shark fins chicken in claypot, and also the fried chicken, the aromatic taste still hover in my memory

i think those old chefs left, so the original Phoneix now became a paper Phoneix!

Nonetheless, the chicken looks so yummy to me.

Yes all the food here looks so yummy. I think it is a lot better than the Phoenix in LA, which I already enjoy so much, especially their dessert.

I just notice the spelling of the Phoenix in HK is not different.

Yes, this one was so famous and it claimed to be the best Phoenix in town and run apart from the other Phoenix restaurant outlets. I think it's also a matter of how they treat customers after they think they are the best. It's always a good point to see some bad things we wouldn't take the same steps.

Pixmation and Stella, check on the skin. It's shrunk and getting wrinkled. That means the step of dressing malt syrup is wrong. The Cantonese deep fried chicken seems to be an easy dish, but it isn't. It's the patience and time and oil temperature control. Check my another new post of how a deep fried chicken should be. :)

omg the better example of deep-fried chicken is in a Maxim's, so the globe is real round, not square .. :-)

Thank you SEA for showing us the good and bad deep fried chicken between Maxim and Phoenix.

Really everything in cycle. So let me come back to this Phoenix 5 years later. :)

Then, maybe you will find yummy offer at Bug and Bee? Not a chance, this place is awarded bad (shall be worst) taste of the century, both the food and the decor, the service and the attire ..

A very controversial decision for me then. I will seriously consider your proposal.
