Il Cielo, Italian restaurant, Dusit Thani, Bangkok, Thailand

Of course, other than the tasting platter, we tried other dishes.

1. Find something inappropriate? 2. Some spicy, some sweet and some curry. I forgot some of it as the others switched my attention.

3. the bread basket. We order one more. :) 4. mushroom soup - nice mushroom flavour.
5. Tomato spaghetti - the tomato sauce is very nice. 6. Crab meat and roe pizza. Very aromatic and I insisted to finish it.

7. Grilled snow fish. Very juicy inside and it's on a very high heat grilling. It's in a very thick cut. 8. Seafood platter. Fresh seafood and nice tomato sauce too.

9. Braised wagyu beef with risotto. The beef brisket cut was used. Though it's a bit salty and probably kind of Southern Italian cooking style, the beef was done very nice. Also the risotto was cooked to a perfect texture. 10. Tiramisu. Nice balance of coffee and vanilla flavour, also very moist.

11. Sorbet - red currant, blood red orange and mint. Quite surprised to see these kinds of flavours. Personally I prefer the sorbet to be less sweet as I can taste the original flavour of the fruit. 12. the entrance.

Excuse me,what is snow fish?

Stella said...

Nice meal but look very expensive.
Snow fish is called Sea Bass in LA($30 US per 4 ounce average in Old Pasadena restaurants).
Did you bring the Starbucks coffee there?

In hk, cod is called 鳕鱼, sea bass is 鲈鱼 or 盲曹 . Their textures are entirely diff. snow fish looks like cod in the pic here!

To Anonymous 10:36pm, the total bill is just around THB7xxx. I didn't expect the portion is quite big and we ordered a bit too much and one of us got stomach bloating all night long.

To Anonymous 12:03pm & 5:36pm, I tend to agree to 5:36pm. I'm not sure if the restaurant named it right as in the first place I was also asked what snow fish is. I was puzzled a bit and referred it to be kind of cod fish. However, when I took it, the texture is not like cod fish and in fact it's very juicy, smooth and sweet . Cod fish is lighter but smoother and sea bass is with a rougher texture. This one is in between cod fish and garoupa.

Next time we shall go there and check for a more details. FYI, this snow fish is at THB690. I think I will try that one next time because the restaurant made it very nice. Aromatic on the outside, juicy inside and very sweet and smooth.

Khun TC, Mr. trainer replied that he is now keeping on diet and last time he just couldn't resist your powerful convincing word. :)

so far as i know, in some asian countries, they tend to use oilfish for cod. this oilfish is smoother and juicer but it's harmful. for ur ref, Aust has banned this oilfish.

don't know who invent the name Snowfish for this fish species, this white flesh, soft texture, gourmet fish is from the cod family (cod is one of biggest family in fish species, from ur fish and chips in a London fast food store to CN grouper (trout cod), they r all cod), Snowfish has many nicknames (or real names, as snowfish herself maybe a nick name instead), sable most comment in the US, as well as black cod and butterfish, similar species r escolar (sold as white tune or sea bass in the US), but not oilfish (u don't eat this fish, it is for industrial use)

CN speaking countries may translate snowfish as 鱈魚, black cod as 銀鱈魚; pacific fresh water sea bass (西曹 or 鱸魚) in Western countries r sea perch, the deep water sea bass from North European water and Chile r very big in size, u don't steam or deep-fried them in whole like 西曹/鱸魚 in a HK restaurant (sea bass is a "big" name too, big family of fish species)

yes, snowfish does sold as sea bass in California

confused? me too!

Wow.. what a detailed explanation. I do agree that in some places food are called differently. Very true that sometimes we just call one conclusive term for certain food like "water morning glory". In HK, there are even quite a no. of different "water morning glory". Actually my 0.1% memory of what my grand mom. explained the different species of 紅衫魚, 或魚...etc.

What a thorough fish workshop here.
Yes TC is correct, snow fish is referred as "Rock Cod" or "Black Cod" in LA(not "Sea Bass").
This Cod/Snow Fish has a smooth texture and quite juicy.
At French Restaurant here this snow/cod fish can sell easily for $30 US per 4 to 6 oz.
Yes Anonymous 10:16 AM, I noticed Starbucks coffee show up twice in this post above.

Black Cod(or called Black Snow Fish) is sold at $9.99/lb at "99 Ranch Market", a Chinese chain supermarket in LA, whereas a live(swimming) sea bass(Chinese named as "Low Yu") is only $5.99 per lb.
So you can tell the "cod" fish is quite expensive.
And the black cod at $9.99/lb is not even the live one.

Mr. Trainer relayed his heartfelt thanks to you and he said we still owe you many many meals. I told him to write the reply though from time to time he browsed yours and mine, he said he couldn't express well and might say something wrong. :)

This looks like lots of food including the tasting platter.
How many people eating here?
How much is the bill?
No need to bring me here as it is too high pressure eating so many good dishes at one meal. (Lots of work for my stomach la.)

To Anonymous 10:16am, you are very observant. Yes, the starbucks was brought a naughty cute boy and Dusit Thani is of course very kid-friendly. If that boy brings this starbucks cup to Pimalai, he would be first beaten up in the air and put behind bars together with scorpions, spiders, fire ants, raging bees....

Stella, we can just order the tasting platter and that's. :)

tell the trainer don't mention it, eating together is a celebration, it is fun, it is fulfilling a lifestyle; just make sure he keeps on the diet in HK and prepare for another spoil meal in Bkk :-)

Bangkok Bangkok we love you!

Stella said...

Yes, I also observed and mentioned about the Starbucks coffee.
You are right, good that this kid left the Starbucks at this kid-friendly hotel instead of that high-end Forbidden City.
Would like to try this restaurant here but only ordered 1/3 of the food here.

都幾跳皮. 係泰國啲餐廳先至唔理.

in the sea said...

Oops.. Stella. I didn't mean to exclude you. Yes, you did bring that up.

in the sea said...

Haha.. Khun TC, trainer found you like a kid and I told him you are, by checking on the Starbucks cup. He is now eating 2 meals a day, but the worst is that the dinner time is big big meal which I told them keeping on diet shouldn't be like that. :)

Thailand Club said...

well well well, pls tell the trainer no matter how he eats back home, in BKK i will treat him to eat like whale; so for his stomach safety, he better cut his dinner portion to enter to a real diet :-) as BKK unfold gourmet is waiting for him ..

That means he needs to work out on stretching the stomach muscle. :)
